Why are covid deaths dropping in the US?

It was at one point on average of 4,000-5,000 deaths per day just a few months ago, now it just 1,000-2,000...

Researchers at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) in a recent briefing noted that one reason for the United States' declining coronavirus case rates is the increasing number of Americans getting vaccinated against Covid-19.

It NEVER averaged anywhere close to 4,000 per day. Late December to the end of January saw the worst numbers, and for the entire month of January, the daily average was 3,490.  I have been logging the daily numbers since the end of February 2020, before the first US death on the 29th.

Why are deaths dropping?  Daily new cases are dropping, that's why.  Daily new cases started to rise sharply going into November, started to average 200k or more per day in early December, that lasted until the middle of January and started to slowly fall.  Deaths come some time after, anywhere from two weeks to six weeks.  So the sharper drop in new cases the last few weeks will not be reflected in getting back into the low 1,000s of deaths per day until the end of this month into April. That's if these new strains that are starting to appear don't start a third wave.

It's a combination of temperature change heard immunity and the vaccine beginning to work and so many people that have had the virus the amount of people left to infect is growing smaller every day

Vaccines.  A large portion of the highest risk groups have now been vaccinated.  This greatly reduces the number of deaths since a large number of people are now "safe" no matter what they do.

People who survived COVID have at least a short time of immunity which also reduces new cases and deaths.

Some people are still being careful because they know they have risks, so they are trying to keep themselves safe so they don't become one of the statistics.
