why does Facebook and Twitter not have more competition? is it really that difficult to open up a similar type of web page? why?
i mean what they offer is really so hard to set up and operate ? it is really that novel of an idea? how?
come to think about it ...HOW DO THEY MAKE SO MUCH MONEY? THERE IS REALLY THAT MUCH MONEY FROM ADVERTISERS? THERE REALLY ARE THAT MANY ADVERTISEMENTS ON THEIR WEBSITES?

Before Facebook and Twitter there were many other sites to go to for Web chat rooms and not as much for posting your information on line that was so centralized. Facebook was a NAME that was easy to remember and it is the name you remember.
. Before Google we used to Yahoo to different sites or use a different browser to go there. To Browse. Browse has been replaced by the word Google so we Google it - meaning we browse or seek info or shop or view or interact by finding it by Googling it. "A Stupid name we remember."
. You want to make a quick statement... a Tweet so Twitter(is what birds do) and you have 128 characters to say what you got to say. It is a catchy name. Simplistic.
When your web site is popular you get many visits. Many visits means many will see the advertising(which cost the advertisers literally nothing and every person who sees it is a potential customer.) Compare that to a TV ad. The advertiser pays to have it on the air. Meaning a loss in profits if it is aired at the wrong time.(say when children are watching and they are selling Rolex watches or female hygiene products or cars. Wrong time slot messes with getting the right people to see it. And it can be repeated over and over again for nearly no cost. Those few cents per view is paid towards the web site. If they have a million view per day, it adds up.
. So yeah it can be decent.
It is hard to come up with a concept and a name that is not identical to another web site. It has to be different.
Y.A. is just an opinion site with general knowledge.

They are successful because they were the pioneers of social media and have been operating successfully and built a very large fan base over about a decade or more. It would be really hard to start another social media site with little to no user base, and no way to promote it.

I could set up a website with better technology and more features than facebook, and nobody would use it. This is because nobody is there.
The value of a social network comes from the userbase. It's just like a telephone being worthless if there's only one.

How much computer power do you think it takes to run Facebook or Twitter? How many people have that much computer power?

Once they accumulate a lot of fans, it makes it more appealing to post, knowing so many people will read what you write.
