Why did people in the middle 1950s hate birth control?

Religion taught people to be fruitful and multiply. Abstinence was the only acceptable form of birth control.

Duh! Called "reverse gear" and many a Catholic can proof that. that does not work.

Did they? I think they probably tried to hid any dirty, Godless sex a secret from the more conservative society. But I also think there were happy there were ways to prevent babies that would be more a month after the wedding
