Mexico has a tropical climate. The sun is hot most times of the year. A darker skin helps protect against the harmful effects of the sun.

Real Mexicans are dark skinned for the simple reason that they are Native Americans.

Are you aware of some Mexicans having Sub Sarahan ancestry in their DNA?
Some genetic tests show that an average Mexican has about 4% sub-Saharan African ancestry, indicating that the Afro-Mexican population "disappeared" because it was absorbed into the larger Mexican gene pool.

Many of them have high percentages of Native Mexican blood. Those with all or mostly Spanish ancestry are more or less white. The mestizos, as the ones with more Native ancestry are called, are darker.

Melanin.

That would be same reason that some Americans and Canadians have dark skin. One or more of their ancestors were from an area where darker skin was predominated such as Africa, the Middle East, Southern Asia and among Native Americans.

For the same reasons people in Africa, the middle east, and lower latitude Asia are dark skinned: evolution. There is more sun as you get closer to the equator, and melanin in the skin blocks UV radiation to help protect the cells from sun damage and potential cancer, so evolution has resulted in darker skin.
