What happens to vast majority of college football players that don't make it to the nfl?

They graduate and get jobs and work 40 hours a week to pay the bills like the rest of us.

I have a childhood acquaintance who played college football - full ride scholarship at a D1 school as a Quarterback, although spent most of his time as a backup. He put his name in the NFL draft but that was a pipe dream and never had any chance of actually getting drafted. He went to a couple NFL combine/tryout events but noting ever came of that. He ended up playing in a European football league for a couple seasons and was doing really well - he was a starter and in the top half of league QB's statistically. It was a cool deal because he got paid to travel around Europe and play football. The pay was nothing special but it was enough that they could afford for his wife to travel along and come to all his games.

After a couple seasons of that it was obvious that the NFL was never going to call him. So when his wife got pregnant they decided it was time to stop traveling so much and settle down. They moved back to our home town, he went to the police academy  and became a county sheriff's deputy.

Not sure of the breakdown of this, and most of it is speculation.  Most college players know that they're not going to play football past college, and plan accordingly.  Some players who don't get drafted by an NFL team, or don't get invited as a free agent for a tryout may end up playing in Canada. Even if a player gets drafted, there's no guarantee that they'll make it as a professional football player, and of those who do manage to play, their career may be very short.

Most (about 90%) know they aren't going to go to the NFL so they get their degree and live normal lives.

Of the rest, some will bounce around minor leagues for a few years and maybe go to an NFL camp if they're lucky. A few might play semi-pro or try other sports like wrestling. Some will find work with their university either as a grad assistant or with the media.

Of those who don't play pro or use their education, they will typically move back home and be just another thug on the street. Most will end up dead or in prison.

Most of them find real jobs that pay them very little, unless they earned a degree in college. Most of them cut classes while in college.  Some of them ended up like George Floyd and get killed by police.

They get regular jobs.  Either that or hide out in Mommy's basement for the next 10 years complaining about the unfairness of life.
