In the movie "2012" (The end of the world). Why were the SUPER RICH selected to survive the apocalypse?

Only the Super Rich and powerful were selected to survive, and the regular people where left to die?

The super rich paid for the construction of the ships and for their quarters aboard the ships. Regular people didn't know about the ships.

They paid for the ships, so it would only be fair that they get a place on them when they launched.

From the perspective of Hollywood, no further explanation seemed necessary.  Like, who would ever imagine otherwise?

Non-rich people might only scuttle aboard the lifeboats through ratholes and sewers.  What could be more natural and realistic?
