For decades, alkaline batteries were the norm.
You need to specify the 16 flavors of you normal batteries.
I will list a couple, IE: nickle cadmium, lithium-ion, nickle metal Hydride (NiMH),
Lithium Polymer, Lead Acid.
It is all about the chemistry and construction of a battery.

Let's assume the normal batteries are carbon batteries. The power of alkaline batteries is much higher than that of carbon batteries, about 2-3 times. However, the discharge current of alkaline batteries is larger than that of carbon batteries during use. If small electrical appliances are used for a long time, alkaline batteries will easily burn out the electrical appliances.

Most "normal" batteries these days are alkaline batteries. Any AA, AAA, C, D, 9V from Duracell, Energizer, etc will be alkaline.
You can still buy zinc carbon batteries which were pretty much the standard before alkaline.

Chemistry.
Most batteries have acid-based electrolyte, whereas alkalines work on the opposite side of the pH spectrum.
It may be of some interest that in most dry cells the outer can is negative
while in alkaline cells the can is positive.
