Whom the God will protect and bless : The virtuous atheist or the sinful theist who is a believer?
To have faith is to believe. A believer will know the way to God. But if they have not repented their sins then they too are lost. An good atheist will still be judged. But it would not matter to them because they do no know the way to God for they do not believe in his existence. God blessed all in his own way. When one picks up their cross and follow Jesus, then man will see life in a different way. Good or bad God is with us. Just have faith.

Backstory on the word 'sin'.
Alexander the Great conquered the known world from 336bc to 323bc. During his reign the Greek language became common like English is today.
The ancient Greek word to describe transgression was a word that translates into "off the mark".
There was no English equivalent, so translators borrowed a term from archery that meant the same thing: 'sin' means 'off the mark'. Shoot an arrow at a target and miss; you're 'off the mark'. It doesn't matter you're one inch or one mile off the mark, you sin.
God is the bullseye. We are all off the mark.
Therefore, in this way, Hitler and Mother Teresa were both sinners, and you are likely somewhere in between, just like the rest of us.
And the only unforgivable sin is to reject the offer of God's forgiveness.
Get right with God and He gives you a new heart, and new eyes to see with. Your behaviour will change as you start to evil things for what they really are: a cancer to your soul.

Most Christian denominations place "belief" over "acts" as the path to salvation. So, they will tell you that an atheist, regardless of how much good they've done in their lives (they sometimes even deny atheists can do good) is always bound for Hell. While, a Christian, regardless of what they've done, if they have accepted Jesus, is bound for Heaven. Frankly, this thinking is one of the best arguments AGAINST Christianity.

God's Word, the Holy Bible, says that "none are righteous, no not one." This is the atheist and unbeliever. When you accept Jesus as your Savior (whom God sent) Jesus takes your sins upon Himself and He gives you His righteousness and the Holy Spirit who purifies you of sin and gets you ready to meet the Lord. Without the Holy Spirit which you receive by believing and accepting Jesus, you have no chance of eternal life. For that reason Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life and no man comes to the father except by me." Easy way to put it is, the Holy Spirit is God the Father and Jesus the Savior living in you. See, at any time the Holy Spirit can bring the words of God from the Holy Bible to your remembrance. He gives them to you when you need them most. It is often possible that the Holy Spirit speaks through those He loves to touch the hearts of others. A Christian is a Vessel for the Lord. They are not perfect, just forgiven.

Psalms 37:11 But the meek will possess the earth,And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.
Matthew 5:5 “Happy are the mild-tempered, since they will inherit the earth.
Psalms 37:29 29 The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.
Romans 12:1 Therefore, I appeal to you by the compassions of God, brothers, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, a sacred service with your power of reason. 2 And stop being molded by this system of things, but be transformed by making your mind over, so that you may prove to yourselves the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. 3 For through the undeserved kindness given to me, I tell everyone there among you not to think more of himself than it is necessary to think, but to think so as to have a sound mind, each one as God has given to him a measure of faith

I will assume that we are talking about the God of the Bible.
God protects and blesses both the theist and atheist. - "He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. " Matt 5:45
Both of them are sinners. - "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Rom 3:23
Both of them are sentenced to death for their sins. - "For the wages of sin is death" Rom 6:23
Both of them have a way to avoid the penalty. - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
"Come now, let us settle the matter," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. " Isa 1:18
Of course if anyone accepts the gift of God to salvation, then they wouldn't be an atheist anymore. And if anyone accepts God's gift of forgiveness then they wouldn't be sinful anymore either.

Everyone is a sinner, all have fallen short of the glory of God, only Jesus Christ the Son of God was without sin. Even Christians sin unintentionally, That why we incessantly pray to our Father, Jehovah God, for forgiveness of our sins in Jesus Christ's name and do our best to do the will of God. Anyone, anyone not exercising faith in Jesus Christ and doing God's will will not enter into God's Kingdom whether atheist or a Christian not living up to his dedication to God given his circumstances.

All atheists are toast
John 3:36 KJV — He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Revelation 21:8 KJV — But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
If a Christian repents of his sins, then God saves us.
Psalm 34:18 KJV — The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

The virtuous atheist, of course, silly.
