Does an existential crisis happen when reality conflicts with what is in our mind of how things should be?

That's certainly one way of seeing it. Problem is, we all carry around narratives about life, existence, etc based largely on our experiences, what we have been taught, and the reinforcing structures around us. Experiencing a dramatic repudiation of some part of that narrative can call into question all or part of that whole narrative.
