What tools are needed for carpet install on stairs?

These tools will likely only be used once so I’m not looking to buy top of the line stuff just good enough for one job.

For close fitted. Measuring tape, utility knife to trim carpet to width, a claw hammer to fix gripper nails strips and any tacks you may need and that's about it.  A flat bolster is useful for fitting carpet into the angle, but you can improvise with a thin piece of wood.  Even easier if you fit a runner, you only need a screwdriver to fit the stair rod brackets and a hammer to tack underlay pads in place. You can get all manner of fancy tools like staple guns and tackers that you you use once and never need again but still have to store.

A staple gun will get the job done as easily as learning how to use specialized tools.
