Is it better to shut it down and starve to death than to get COVID?

Every year, or every month for the past however many years, some number of people die in any given area. We just do that. We fall off buildings, we get pneumonia, we get taken out by cancer, our kidneys fail, or we run our cars into things. A few of us get fatally tossed off our horses. This year some people died directly from the COVID-19 virus. Some tested positive for it, but died of something else.

Do we have any good figures on how many extra people died this year, or each month, or such, compared to other years? When the virus first appeared I was hearing that zillions of people were going to die from it. What are the actual overall death numbers compared to other years?

Shutting down won't starve us to death.  Other countries did it without starving.
