SWL is the most common kidney stone treatment. It works best for small or medium stones. It's noninvasive, which means no cuts are made in your skin.

If they are bigger than 6 mm, then the best option is lithotripsy.

Last year I was in severe pain and went to ER and eventually they found I had kidney stones, one in my urethra and large one in kidney, as far as I know they used laser treatment to remove them, they also told me the large stone had probably been there for around 10 years. I was told before surgery they might not be able to get the large one and that would be a second operation in the future, thankfully they got both of them, they also put a stent in for around 6 weeks as I also had sepsis and had to wear adult diaper to bed until stent was removed, I was off work for 5 months
