Why do most people derive their happiness from friends/partners?

How can they be happy with themselves?

    Because they think that loving them selves requires outside affirmation from another which in truth isn't true. It comes from the inside.

    If I knew the answer to that I would have chosen death since I won't need anything after achieving that.

    We need time with other people and time alone. Some people like hobbies. Meditation has become very popular. If you're interested -

    Because the loneliness that most people feel without them can be devastating. Most of us are not cut out to be hermits. Being happy with yourself involves working toward the person you'd like to be, but that doesn't mean that all of your social needs disappear once you reach that goal.
