Are teachers meaner to their favourite students?

They are often harder on their favourite students because they see those students' gifts and talents and want them to make full use of those talents.
With students who are less gifted, many teachers feel there's no point in trying to force them to work harder as they'll never be brilliant.

Sometimes we overcomsensate while trying to avoid showing favoritism. We don't intend to be mean. One of the many failings of teacher education is not addressing the fact of life that some students are more appealing than others. Sometimes "favoritism" is only in the eyes of the other students who then complain to the counselors which may result in the teacher having to act colder toward that student just for the sake of appearances, regardless of how they actually feel abiut them.
