Why is there so much regional inequality in the UK?

For such a small island I'm still blown away about how different areas of the UK are poorer than others. The southern part being more wealthy then the further north you go the poorer it gets, Scotland is just an impoverished dump. They blame it on thatcher but that was almost 40 years ago, how on earth is it still relevant today. The UK just seems to be stuck in the past and unable to economically progress.

I find it hard to think you have ever been to Scotland, if you think it is an "impoverished dump"

Wow you do not know very much about the UK do you, if that is the assumptions you make............  ALL areas like any other country in the world have well off areas and poorer areas in each county.

The highest number of people renting is in the South of Britain

What is claimed to be the 'poorest' is Northern Ireland and yet the standard of living and quality of life there is the highest of the whole of the UK, also with more millionaires per square mile in Co Down than anywhere else in the UK, also has the highest qualified/educated population than anywhere else in the UK....
