All wheel drive is usually run by the computer and is on all the time with some limited settings. Four wheel drives are typically pickup trucks that are rear wheel drive until you shift it manually to 4 wheel drive.

For all practical purposes on road they are pretty much the same. Either one will get you thru the snow. If you want to go OFF ROAD then you definitely want four wheel drive. It is a more robust system and will handle rocks and boulders better plus most come with a low range for more power on the trails. I had a ML320 and a GL 350 and I took both of them off road and they worked just fine.
