occasionally a new resistant strain of pathogen appears. the new strain may spread rapidly. Explain why?

    Because people gather together in groups and one infected person can thus infect lots of others -- and so on, and so on, and so on.  Add travel by airplane to other countries.  Add travel by ship, train, bus.  Anywhere you see people who are confined and not social distanced, you have a potential pathogen spreading event.  Churches, rallies, sports events, schools, ...

    A lot of individuals that have been exposed to a pathogen either dies or they develop immunity to the pathogen. A new pathogen may have new proteins that attack cells but there are no antibodies against the new protein.
