what is the difference between a drive axle and a steering axle?

    The wheels on the steering axle turn when you turn the steering wheel, to steer the car.

    The wheels on the drive axle rotate about the axle when driven by the engine (or electric motors) to push the car forward or backwards.

    On many cars the front axle is both the steering axle and the drive axle.

    On a rear wheel drive vehicle, the drive axle is at the back and the steering axle is at the front.
