Also what is the best exercise for beginners we were told 10,000 steps a day will help you loose weight

Weight loss is 80% about a person's diet and 20% about exercise. 10,000 steps a day will help you burn calories and boost your metabolism, and if a person is already in the process of fat burning, they may lose a small amount of weight from walking and exercise. Exercise keeps us strong and toned and it's great for our heart, lungs and other organs, as well as muscle mass.
There are a lot of proven weight loss plans out there, and even some which prevent and even reverse diseases. The Ketogenic is an example of one of these diets.

Weight loss and maintenance are 80% diet. Exercise will help, but most people can cut a lot more calories from their diet then they have time to exercise away.
Steps is really an artificial measure. Sure, walking burns a few more calories than sitting and walking 10K steps is going to be about 5 miles. The problem is that you can probably go 10K steps throughout your day without getting much if any cardiovascular improvement or really burn that much.
There are hundreds of workouts on YouTube that don't require any equipment and hundreds more that require a couple of hand weights. Look for terms like cardio, aerobic, full-body, HIIT, and tabata. Choose a beginner workout and follow the modifier. Always focus on form/technique over speed or number of reps.

Both diet and exercise together are important to lose weight and gain strength. Dieting doesn't mean don't eat. It is more than possible to continue eating so you feel full but eat 'better' for yourself by decreasing your calorie intake. You don't have to starve. The reason exercise helps lose weight is because you burn calories when you exercise.
You don't have to and it's probably not wise to do 10,000 of anything per day if you haven't been exercising. You need to and should start slowly, only do what you can until you feel the 'burn'. As you continue to exercise daily you'll gradually be able to do more, and maybe exercise more often.
Exercise also doesn't have to be lifting weights and running. You can simply just walk more often or futher distances or take the longer routes to your destinations but walk at a faster pace so you get there at the same time.

Both are important. Running and jogging will help you better. For 6 days eat healthy, then on the 7th day you can eat all the calories you can eat.
