What do you need to learn/play the electric guitar?

Amplifier, etc.

An electric guitar, an amplifier/speaker, a cable to connect the two together and something to learn from - a good teacher is definitely the best option.

Unless you intend playing finger style you'll need picks (what we in the UK used to call plectrums). If you want to play standing up you'll need a strap. You'll also need a spare set of strings and, most importantly... you’ll need an electronic tuner - make sure you know how to use it, I don't know how they manage it but there are actually some people who can't.
