Where do I connect the black and white wires on a ceiling fan?

I am trying to install a new ceiling fan whose instructions suggest installing the single white wire on the fan to the white wire on the ceiling fixture, and the single black wire on the fan to the black wire on the ceiling fixture. However, I am not sure how to go about it since there are 3 black wires capped together, 2 white wires capped together, and a single white wire.

spend 10 bucks on a multimeter.  the usual way would be to connect the white to the two whites that are connected together and the single white to the black of the fan, leaving the three black wires in the ceiling alone.  AND testing the lonely white wire for whether or no the switch makes it hot will tell you for sure.
