installing A/C into a classic car?

I have a classic 1980 124 Fiat i want to buy, but the only thing holding me back is the fact that it has no A/C and i live in Florida, so its an issue. What are some companies that can install it for me? or can i go to a mechanic? Also, how expensive do you think it would be? (an estimate). I don't know much about cars so i don't know the process, etc.

You have to add three parts.   First part would go in front of the radiator to cool the compressed Freon.   Because it is hot the air going thru it gets hot and the radiator for the car will not work as well.   When they make a car they know it is going to have an AC so can put in a bigger radiator for the car.   You may find your car over heats after you installed the AC.   Second part is the compressor.   That usually is driven by a belt off the engine.   You have to have a place to put it that is in line with the engine.   You might not be able to do that.   Third part is inside the car where the cooled decompressed Freon can cool the car.   Have to find a place for that too.    When you get it all in you added weight AND you put an additional load on the engine.  You may find the car drives like a slug.    Last issue is cost.   Spend enough money and you can add AC to anything but is it worth it?    Look up auto AC companies in your local area and they can tell you if it can be done and how much it will cost.   Personally,  for a car that is 40 years old,  I would not waste my money.

A Fiat 124 is rather small with an equally small engine.  You need an add-on automotive a/c system that you can find room for the evaporator unit (car interior) plus the condenser in the engine compartment plus the compressor on the engine.

A Fiat 124 Spider is an open air sports car.  It's not likely that you can easily do this.

I guestimate a few thousand dollars for a sensible installation.

There are other sources for A/C kits.

    Do some online research.

-Engine overhaul mechanic and general automotive mechanic since 1972

    -Automotive A/C repair since 1980

About $500, plus installation.  How good are you?

this is great, thanks! The money isnt an issue. Im willing to invest in the car, but im afraid itll ruin it or make it difficult to take care of.

Dated thread but some ideas of how to go about it - probably need to make some phone calls and start searching for Fiat specific shops/restorers http://www.fiatspider.com/f15/viewtopic.php?t=2513...

If it had air and its broken, you might get it repaired reasonably. ADDING a/c when it did not come with it would be prohibitively expensive. I think.
