How did people surf the web before Google?
I'm talking the FTP era. How would one discover FTP web pages without a search engine?

Oh, you're talking about before Archie Query Form in 1990?
They did it by having a big list of web sites to choose from kind of like the hidden wiki with Tor.
It was kind of hard to find this but this is how they used to search the internet in the 1980's, check the source it's called WHOIS. My head kind of hearts right now and I don't feel like reading all of it and summarizing it for you.
Keep in mind back then people had more access to computers(not that many people)(I remember hearing my say parents that they were getting called weird for using the internet in 1995) in the 1980's than the internet.
Some early DOS programs then must've been pretty useful I guess.Source(s): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WHOIS

There were human-indexers such as Yahoo. There was an expert system, Ask Jeeves. There were crawlers such as Altavista.
