What explains the attraction of backyard campfires in urban areas? Why do some people need them so badly?

It's not a need, it's a preference.  If you've got a backyard, you've got a house.  It's much easier to get warm and cook food inside a house, so a backyard fire is just for fun.

Everyone likes a good campfire.  That's the attraction.

People just love to sit by a fire!  There's really no substitute for a nice fire.  It's something in our nature that goes back to the beginning of our species!  It was being able to control fire that brought us out of the trees and taught us to walk upright!  It was learning to cook meat that made our jaw muscles smaller so there would be more room for our brains.

I am Ozzie Klunk and I hate this response.  I up-voted it because it's probably correct.
