Why did people in the early 20th century keep a mustache like this?

    I had one of those while I was in the Canadian Forces.  Kids at my daughter's daycare would ask why I had it, and I would say I was in the military,  and such moustaches were cool there.  While true, that did not work.  So, I used to say that I liked cats, and I wanted whiskers like a cat.  The kids would pause, and then smile in agreement.  It worked.

    So, cool, or looking like a cat.  Take your pick!

    Because it was cheaper than keeping a hamster. And strained the flies out of soup. 'Astings exercise the leetle gray cells, mon brave.

    Fashion statement. Sort of like the spiked jelled hairdos of the late 20th century.
