Start looking at their plan if any, and their intent
Or how set on their plan they are.
( ethics prevent me from sharing more )
Decide to reduce risk and protect vulnerable
Client from self or other harm ASAP!
Very best wishes

They do an assessment as to how far along their suicidal thinking goes. Do they have a plan, have they decided on a method, have they written any letters, given away any personal things, etc.

Assess further, there's a difference between thought and intention and varying levels of intent... is there a plan, has there ever been a plan, is there a history of suicide, are they willing to safety plan or contract for safety?

We address the sucidality index inventory. There are factors that indicate the lethality of one's claims of idiation. Including ways and mean, passed attempts, and passed attempts of a loved one. These help to rule out the event of a paracide, as therapy can be a bit of a power-play at times. In the event of high lethality, the therapist can either suggest or force the individual into emergency observation according to the statutes of that state.
But that said, your therapist isn't gunning to imprison you. You see them with the goal to get well and if you truly don' think you can control yourself from self harm, giving up control to your hopefully trustworthy therapist to place you in care may be what's best. But like I said, in-patient residency is not the first choice because frankly it's expensive and overcrowded. You are not likley to get in even if that is your one main goal. So don't be afraid to talk about your thoughts of suicide to your therapist. That's what they are there for.
The sad part on the topic of overcrowding is most people don't get help and an indeed paracide results in arrest and charges for trespassing or firearm charges which only brings more problems to the point where, on the clock I'm not allowed to say this, our society f-cked you so bad, that really is your best option. However, by that point you have no means or will to do so. But I can prescribe mediation in 2 states to make you happy enough to go through with it.

Psychiatrists and prsychologists are different. Psychiatrists are medical doctors specialising in problems of the mind, so they listen to your symptoms and prescribe medication. If yo mention suicide they will ask you specific questions to determine how serious you are, and only if they think you are in immediate risk of suicide, they can have you locked up for assessment. This is very rare though.
Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. They listen to your problems for an hour, and use talk therapy to try to solve them. They will try to talk you ouot of suicidal thoughts by helping you to figure out what is wrong with your life, and what you can do to change it.

they make that little motion with their hand behind the notepad, to pretend they're writing this down. then they say something like that, "that's interesting," or whatever.

Patronize and take notes. Prescribe drugs.
Not knocking their hustle. But I do think they're over paid. 😄
