Why are infants so ugly hours after being born?
I see so many ugly babies at birth then cute when they turn about a month old. Why are we ugly when we are first born?

They do kinda look like squished little aliens, lol. By about a month old most have put on a couple of pounds and are a little more filled out, and I think that bit of baby chub is what makes us so endeared to them. A baby who is gaining weight is probably pretty healthy and has a good chance of survival, so our attraction to their cuteness just fosters protective instincts, increasing their odds of survival even more.

They will gain a little weight - chubbier cheeks (still a little skinny at birth). The bones on the head will spread out a little so the head is more proportioned, especially on the top (head may be smaller or narrower on top due to being squeezed through birth canal). They will open their eyes more/wider (eyes are squinty at first) Skin will smoothe out a little. They will be more aware and look around more (eyes don't focus well at first). Eyes will have more definition between pupil and iris (eyes are dark and only at first). Maybe more hair.
But, they aren't ugly to the parents.

Try spending about 38 weeks in a vat of fluids and see how you turn out.

DNA explains all of that.
