Why are standard departure procedures important? In terms of Aviation?

    If everyone is doing it the same way you are far less likely to run into each other. The real mess in this are copters which think they can do their own thing.

    For regulating the expeditious and orderly flow of high-speed traffic out of the terminal area and into the IFR enroute structure.

    Two planes trying to occupy the same point in space at the same time is very bad.
