Why did the U.S have outdated nuclear weapons in Turkey?

The only way to launch the 50 nuclear weapons in Turkey is with planes that Turkey doesn't have. Why weren't there more advanced nuclear missiles stationed there instead?

Update:

The past tense word "did" is used since Turkey controls them now.

Cuban Missile Crisis. While everyone knows we made the Russians pull their missiles out of Cuba there was a quid pro quo, we pulled out missiles out of Turkey. That left nukes launched or dropped from planes as the only option. We have a USAF Air Base in Turkey that we can fly from.

Turkey fired on American troops as they fled Syria.

Nuclear weapons have no practical application. They are there as token of mutual support. Similar arrangements with US nukes exist with Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Italy.  Replacing the B-61 bombs with ones that are more precise and have adjustable yield is being considered

because the US doesn't have missiles stationed anywhere, all missiles are based in the US.

the bombs in turkey are not for turkeys use, they are for american use.

Russian SAMs can easily pick off planes transporting nuclear weapons. The nukes in Turkey are obsolete. Why was there obsolete technology in Turkey?

I guess the Americans don't care about Turkey that much. They shouldn't have been there in the first place though. Americans need to mind their own business.

Did not trust the Turks, this way if they turned, they could not readily use the weapons.

The intent isn't to launch them, it's to turn Turkey into a giant radioactive pit.
