Can you roast chestnuts in a dry frying pan?

I don't have an open log fire, but i want to roast chestnuts at Christmas

Update:

I also cant't use the oven because of my gluten intolerance

    Yes, that's the way it was done when I used to get chestnuts from street vendors in Italy at this time of year.

    No. As others have noted, that would be pan toasting not roasting.  Roasting in done in the oven.  While cross-contamination is a tiny possibility with convection ovens, is is just as likely to have gluten in the air of your home, on counters and utensils, and in cabinets. It is nearly impossible to avoid  gluten in a house/kitchen where gluten is stored or served.

    Those would be toasted, not roasted.  Put them on a pan in the oven.

    I've purposefully ignored your details.  Your oven doesn't contain gluten.

      It's absolutely their fault, make your roommates clean the oven.  They could be a bit more sympathetic to your situation. I would expect the cleaning cycle of an oven to denature the proteins in gluten.
