Governments are not interested in individual freedom. Governments exist to defend the interests of the ruling class.

The question starts from the wrong perspective and a certain level of ignorance about rights and freedoms. All rights come with the obligation to use them responsibly. Personal freedom is constrained by the duty to use it responsibly. What if we have conflicts of personal freedom? What if my personal freedom clashes with your personal freedom? What if my personal freedom affects others, possibly adversely? Should we just fight it out to see which of us dies first or is that an irresponsible, unsustainable idea? Economic systems that fail to take account of our collective best interests must eventually be self-limiting.
Economic systems exist that favour selfishness. In all civilised societies, such economic systems are moderated by rules that are mostly necessary where intellect and long-term vision are absent.
Governments that respect individual freedoms exercised in a socially responsible way can be of any persuasion and will tend to reflect the normal economic model of the west of regulated capitalism coupled with social support systems. Such economic systems work in the long term.
