What is the meaning of imperative?

They simply continued to get bigger as they aged, growing until their hearts could no longer support them. Then they died, killed by their body's own growth imperative.

    Imperative implies a must..... not by force, but naturally, willingly indicating inherent tendency or flow rather than any external compulsion.
