Remove the brackets by expanding.
4(x5) + 3 = 31
Isolate for x.
4x  20 + 3 = 31
4x = 31 + 20  3
4x = 48
Divide both sides by 4.
4x/4 = 48/4
x = 12

Given that 4(x5) +3=31. opening the bracket
this becomes 4x20+3=31..collecting like terms then simplify
this becomes 4x=31+203
this imply that 4x=48..dividing both sides by 4
this becomes, x= 12,answer

4x  20 + 3 = 31
Then, isolate for variable,
4x = 31 + 20  3
Then simplify,
4x = 48
Then divide by 4 to solely isolate for x,
x = 12

Step one: Remove the ( ) by doing the multiplication.
4X20+3 = 31
Step two: Combine like Terms:
4X17=31
Step Three: Add 17 to both sides of the equation
4X= 48
Step Four: Divide both sides of the equation by 4
X= 12

That's an easy one as you can just work back through it, undoing one stage of the calculation at a time:
4 (x5) +3 = 31
4 (x5) = 28
x5 = 7
x = 12

I don't know what the technique is called today. I learned how over 50 years ago.
