Is it rare to find a boss who thanks an employee at the end of the day?

We worked late tonight and when my boss said I could clock out and take off, he thanked me. Before this job, I worked 15 years in meat processing and never heard a thank you once.

    I am a boss,

At my current job, my head boss doesn't even know the two words,

I say them all the time, My head boss doesn't know how to smile either.

Yes its rare to be verbally thanked, however, keep in mind you are paid by your company to work, your paycheque is your "thanks".

However, some bosses like to have a positive and constructive working atmoshphere, and will thank their employees for working.

you shouldn't NEED one. you ARE getting paid, right? that is your thanks.

if he thanked you, it may be because nobody else ever wanted to work overtime, so you really helped him out.

No not at all. All of your employers, past and present, thank you by having hired you and by paying you, you ungrateful ninny, do you ever thank them?
