    Using q as the number of quarters and n as the number of nickels.

    There are 20 quarters and nickels in my pocket translates into

    q + n = 20

    "2 more" will translate to +2

    2 times as many quarters translates as 2q

    and so "2 more than two times as many quarters is 2 + 2q

    This is the number of nickels so

    n = 2 + 2q

    The whole point is to have two equations with two variables.

    Now you can solve this by substitution

    Going back to q + n = 20, replace n with 2 + 2q and now you have

    q + 2 + 2q = 20

    simplify this into

    3q + 2 = 20

    and subtract 2 from both sides to get

    3q = 18

    and so q = 6. and since n + q = 20, n must be 14
