why is it bad to open a hot radiator?

I do it all the time with a rag. Best way to drain out coolant while the thermostat is still open. never had any water spray at my face

Because It's actually a gateway into hell. (that's why it gets so hot.)

Only an idiot removes the radiator cap before the engine has cooled

You know damn well why most people should be told that. It also doesn't matter if the thermostat is open or closed jojo.

BS. You KNOW that you have NEVER drained the coolant with the engine running.

Consider yourself lucky. I have had it happen more than once...

The coolant is about 200 degrees. The cooling system is under pressure. Don't do it. You may damage the radiator.

Opening the drain plug is less explosive than opening the pressure cap.

You've got it figured out, for yourself. Other people are not so clever, or lucky.
