x + y = 51

x - y = 5

---------------

2x = 56

x = 28

from eq1 1

x + y = 51

28 + y = 51

y = 51 - 28

y = 23

The numbers are 28 and 23.... Answer//

The sum of 2 numbers is 51.

Their difference is 5.

x + y = 51

x - y = 5

2x = 56

x = 28, y = 23.

The answer is x= 23 and y= 28...

Because you said the difference is 5 but it splits into half because it the sum of 2 (1/2) so half of 5 is 2.5, half of 51 is 25.5. That number is 2.5 more then 23 and 2.5 less then 28. Marking 25.5 right in the middle!!!!!!

The numbers are (51 + 5)/2 = 28 and (51 - 5)/2 = 23.

Source(s): If x+y=m and x-y=n then 2x = m+n, so x = (m+n)/2, and 2y = m-n, so y = (m-n)/2.- Log in to reply to the answers

So ..

A + B = 51

and

A - B = 5

Take the second one

A - B = 5

add B to both sides

A = 5 + B

Now, substitute A for 5 + B in the first one

A + B = 51

5 + B + B = 51

subtract 5 from both sides

B + B = 51 - 5

add the B's together and subtract 5 from 51

2B = 46

divide both sides by 2

B = 23

and to get the other number ..

51 - 23 = 28

So the numbers are 23 and 28

Hint: Try to work it out.

Since the difference is 5, the two numbers are close to each other.

So try 25 & 26. Nope.

Try 24 & 27, nope.

Try a few more.

Done!

Or algebraically: a+b=51 & a-b = 5. Solve the system. Done!

Hopefully no one will spoil you the answer thereby depriving you from your personal enhancement; that would be very inconsiderate of them. Too late!
