We have conducted a mesocosm experiment in our biology class, but how can you tell if the mesocosm is stable?

    You could seal it up and see if it's still going a year from now, two years, three, ...

    Hint:  these are never stable.  You're always going to get succession as nutrients become unavailable due to forming nonreactive compounds over time.  Eventually your system won't be able to support life at all.  Similarly, your lead-acid car battery doesn't last forever.
