5.12 is equal to 5-12/100 = 5-3/25, You need some sort of separator between the 5, which is a whole number, and the fraction portion 12/100.

Always convert by multiplying by (1)

100% = 1

divide both sides by 100%

(1) = 1/100%

that also means 100%/1 = (1)

You have 5.12%

5.12% (1/100%) = 0.0512

The percent signs top and bottom cancel

====

Conversly, if you have 0.0512 and want a percent:

0.0512 (100%/1) = 5.12%

Think of it like this.

5% will be 5/100

5.1% will be 51/1,000

5.12% will be 512/10,000

= 256/5,000

= 128/2,500

= 64/1,250

= 32/625

5.12% is equal to 512/10000 which can be reduced to 32/625

you take the 5.12 and move the decimal until you get rid of it, so in this case you move it to the right twice

then you move the decimal on the bottom number 100 to the right the same number of times so it becomes 10000

so then we have 512/10000 which can be reduced down to 32/625 with a greatest common factor of 16

The five is a whole number. The 12 is simply a fraction of 100. If you divide 12 by 4 and 100 by 4 as well....You get 3/25.

So your answer is 5 & 3/25.

No .. 5.12 is the % that you are turning into a fraction .. the whole 5.12 .. not just the .12
