How should I respond when people ask me about things I would rather keep to myself?

Depends on what they ask. E.g., for "How old are you?" jokingly say, "That's a secret."

Just give a vague one line answer and try to divert the conversation and bring up a different topic, trust me it works

I always make a bit of a joke about it, and reply with: “A policeman wouldn’t ask me that!!”

Try "that's really none of your business". I used it on my mother often with great success.
