Can depression cause memory issues?

Also what does depression feel like, I don't know if I am depressed or not. Is it painful?

Update:

Also can anxiety cause memory issues since you are more focused on something else rather than the task at hand, like what other people think of you or something.

Yes, many mental illnesses cause memory issues. They also cause concentration, sleep, and general energy levels (both physically and mentally) to decline, or speed up in the case of Bipolar.

Depression itself is emotionally painful. It can also feel like you are numb. Whilst the illness itself is not physically painful, it can lead to body aches and pains.
