How can a USA radio station be heard in Canada?

One of old phones had a radio app and it used to catch this station that was based in Los Angeles. I used to listen to this podcast every night in Toronto. I'm wondering how that was even possible. There's Toronto based stations that I can't listen to when I get even a bit out of Toronto, so how did this one work?

Skip. Radio Frequencies can skip off the ionosphere. Even low power CB radios can skip off it and be heard at great distance. Ironically, you are more likely to hear a radio station from over 1000 miles away than one from just a few hundred miles away.

The app is taking the radio signal which is being broadcast to the internet and you're listening to Internet radio you're not receiving radio waves you're picking it up from the internet
