How to make a long range two way radio for home use.?
I have some family that live in the same state and ideally I would like to set up something at both of our homes using two way radio equipment such as a receiver, antennas, etc. I know that handheld two-way radios don't work well in urban areas, but I am wondering if there is equipment that would allow for a set up of communication over about a 30 mile distance. I would also like to use this in the event of an emergency such as a power outage to communicate by hooking up to a generator. Is any of this even possible? Thank you in advance!

I agree with Markus but you also might consider CB radios if you do not feel like getting your ham license. CB radios offer generally better range than GMRS or FMRS UHF radios and you can get them for pretty cheap. Keep in mind that you will need a 12 volt DC power supply, external antenna and coax cable for each radio setup.

IPOC or IPTT are the newest product in the handheld radio world, they're two way radios that use mobile data to transmit rather than radio waves. This gives you limitless range so communication over a 30 mile distance is nothing for these! You can find them on the internet for quite a reasonable price.

Sure. It's called ham radio. Lots of various equipment available, from hand helds to stuff you need a truck for moving around (if you buy military surplus). Whether or not you (or any operartor for the equipment) need a license for the specific equipment you want to use will depend on your local laws. In most countries, you will need a license. In some countries, you will be imprisoned when found in posession of these devices.
There's also various systems for professional or commercial use. Different operator licenses and conditions apply in this case.
