Is alcoholism really a disease?
I know its counted as one but it is really one?

It's considered as a disease of the brain - especially for people who are highly addicted. My research shows that there is a debate on this subject. You can check out google to find more info

All forms of addiction are considered to be diseases. They result from genetic differences in the brain that make the person far more susceptible to the addictive potential of these substances. Which is why most people who drink do NOT become addicted.

A disease involves harmful germs that attack the body. Alcoholism is an addiction.

Alcoholism meets all the CDC’s criteria for what a disease is. It is a mental, emotional, and physical disease. It can be passed down genetically, severe head trauma, (is CTE a disease? Is Alzheimer’s a disease?) or self-inflicted due to damaging neural pathways in the brain by over indulging. Some people are more predisposed to it than other. People don’t like to look at alcoholism/the DISEASE of addiction as a disease because the symptoms are not something easily sympathized with. Alcoholics have an uncanny ability to destroy everything around them. And no, the actions displayed by alcoholics are a lot of times incredibly immoral and down right horrid. But if the alcoholic is unaware of the problem he cannot fix it. Now, an alcoholic who knows the solution and chooses to ignore it in order to continue the life he was living is A) an idiot and B) an asshole. Alcoholism is a disease. And it is treatable. It’s just not as conventional and easy to put in a box as some would like.

Disease: “a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury”. Alcoholism is an addiction or dependency, an addiction or dependency that falls under the definition I just gave makes alcoholism a disease of the mind.

The only "disease-like" aspect of alcoholism is that if people do not stop drinking, their physical and mental health gets worse.

It’s a symptom of a mental problem. The alcohol does the damage physically .
