Nowadays, Taylor Swift. Her melodies are unbelievably catchy.

Almost all "Elton John" songs are lyrics by Bernie Taupin, music by Reg Dwight (Elton").

Yeah. Right. "Cracklin' Rosie," - "bah bah bah bah ..." "Sweet Caroline" = "buh buh buh". Wow! What a POET! Must have taken him a decade to com up with those inspiring lyrics!

Beethoven (his fifth symphony simply blows me away, even though I'm a big fan of rock 'n' roll)

Beethoven wrote only tunes. A song requires a poem or lyrics sang to the music.

Never could decide between Cole Porter . . . Irving Berlin . . . or Richard Rodgers; but extra points to those who created both music and lyrics.

(as an aside: for years, I thought it was amazing that lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II could devise the words to fit a melody - but recently saw an old interview with Richard Rodgers and he said that Hammerstein first wrote the words, then RR had to come-up with a melody they fit. Incredible !!!!!!!!)

But can anything beat Cole Porter, like You Do Something To Me: "Do do that voodoo that you do to me" .. inspired...yeah, I know that was a different era . . . . am an Elton John fan . . . . . . but the 30s,40s,50s produced so many incredible writers and artists - another "Greatest Generation"
