Some are not fertilized, some are eaten by other fish and aquatic life. Some Hatch and become minnows. Some of the minnows die of disease. Some are eaten by bears and/or birds. Some of those die in terrible accidents with power generators. Some of them die while whale watching. Some are chopped up in powerboat encounters. A few reach adulthood.

This is lucky for us or we would be swimming in fish.

The species would not survive if the fish did not lay enough eggs to assure that some of them would live long enough to reproduce.

Nature can't be justified. It's random and unpredictable.
