Before the fight Vaseline is used as a lubricant to make the soft rubber boxing gloves slip off so cuts happen less frequently. I'm actually quite surprised that's legal because it seems like a huge advantage of one fighter has Vaseline and the other doesn't. But since Vaseline is also used to stop cuts from bleeding I guess they apply it before the fight to prevent friction between the face and gloves too.

Gloves made of a frictional material, face vulnerable to friction at force, common sense.

It's to stop the bleeding, cant fight with blood pouring down their face.

This is a guess it is to help with the opponents gloves sliding after a blow to prevent getting hurt as bad if they did't use vaseline.

Vaseline will lubricate the face and make the skin more elastic, allowing it to stretch and take less damage after a hard punch. This, in turn, means the boxers are less likely to experience tears in their skin as the match goes on
