Would you say the Old testament is closer to the Quran than it is to the New Testament?

No, I'd say the Quran is closer to the Old Testament, from which it got it's inspiration.

    Only in one sense.

The "old covenant" (from which we get the term "Old Testament" was part of a theocracy God made with the ancient Israelites (Ex 19:3-8), and thus contained crimes and punishments for that nation. Similarly the Koran is a also a political ideology, and also contains its own crimes and punishments. The similarity stops there.

The ancient Israelites voluntarily agreed to their covenant with God. In stark contrast with Islam, we have passages like these.

Q.2:193 “Fight them on until there is no more tumult and religion becomes that of Allah”

Q.9:29 "Fight those who do not believe in God and the last day... and fight People of the Book, (Christian and Jews) who do not accept the religion of truth (Islam) until they pay tribute (Zizziya tax) by hand, being inferior. (30) The Jews call ´Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah´s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth!”

Islam subverts countries' laws, forces itself upon others, and thus should be illegal (and any Muslim who tells you otherwise is using taqiya on you). Under the NT, God uses existing governments to punish wrongdoers (Rom 13:1-5). There are no crimes and punishments under the new covenant that all Christians are under.

No. Not even close except for a very few regulations (which make up an extremely small portion of the Old Testament).

Meanwhile: dozens (hundreds?) of Old Testament passages are quoted in the New Testament.

    I know.

But It makes me wonder why Christians demonize the Quran so much but praise the Old Testament because they are nearly the same book.

Yes, Muslims and Jews follow many similar rules such as not eating pork.
