A rectangle has a width of 15 inches and a diagonal of 17 inches.
The length of the rectangle: sqrt (17^2 - 15^2) = 8 inches

8 inches. Know your right triangle triples. (3,4,5), (8,15,17), (5,12,13), (7,24,25).
Pythagorean theorem. For a right triangle: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 where a and b are the sides and c is the hypotenuse.

A rectangle has right angles so we know that 15sqrd + Lsqrd = 17sqrd
so L = 17*17 - 15* 15
L = 8
