having learned English in Canada, these are my thoughts on American English.
The accent is ok except for people from Texas. Sometimes they talk with thick western accent which is hard to be understood by people from outside Texas. It is not that I cant understand most American English, but American like to use idioms such as "take it as a grain of salt", "you tell me!", "break a leg", "not a big fan!", "not on the same boat". At first I was confused by what it means. But later, I found out the meaning of those idioms.
And btw, try to be nice to foreigners because they come to the states to spend money. Usually I notice so many times when a foreigner asks for a direction politely, some American dude rudely says "sorry dont understand your English!". I knew this rude American understood what the foreigner said but because the foreigner had an accent, the american pretended that they dont understand the question. Be nice OK!
I had been to many places in the states. Mainly in California and New York state. But I went to Austin once (not a good place for visitors). Hot and unfriendly folks
